DoItYourself GUIDE: Using a CPU fan to cool the cabinet!
Some of us may have a free CPU fan lying around. Here is how to use it as a case fan.
You need-
1 3 pin CPU fan
2 Sticking tape,Electrical insulation tape.
3 Wires.
4 Wire cutters.
Optional-
1 Drill machine.
2 Molex connector.
3 Quick fix or super glue (Like Fevi Quick)
4 Screws.
The fan-
CPU fans have 3 pin connectors generally,
Red +12V
Black -12V
Blue-RPM control.(your fan may have different colours for wires)
This plugs onto the motherboard.
Find such a pin on motherboard that label "Fan2" or something like that.
Method1-
First problem is that the wires are too short for reaching the end of cabinet. So, we will extend it to a sufficient length. Take favourable 3 pieces of wire, of suitable length, preferably of the colours that the fan has originally. Different colour? Don’t worry.
Cut ONE of the wires halfway between the fan and the 3 pin. Join the Piece of wire we just readied. Repeat the process for other 2 wires one by one. This way You will not mess up any thing. Now we have a fan with sufficient wire to reach any corner of the Cabinet!
Find a convenient location and screw it in. Otherwise tape it down or just stick it up with some superglue. A temp RPM control FAN!!!
Taddaaa!
Method2-
Don’t have such 3 pin power pin on the Motherboard? Read on!
CUT Red and Black wires as shown earlier, Let the Blue wire be intact. Connect these wires to a Female Molex connector so that RED wire gets connected to Yellow wire on the Molex connector from the PSU. And black wire to the Black one (near to yellow one).
Done! Plug it in to a free Molex Connector from PSU and Boot up the box. See the fan spinning at full speed!!
Technical terms-
1 PSU-the power supply for the PC
2 Molex- A 4 pin Power connector that powers the hard disk (IDE) or CD
drives. Yellow wire on the right edge has +12V Voltage(Which we used to
power the fan). Red wire on the Left edge has 5V.Middle 2 black wires are
Ground or negative (We used one of them for Negative wire of the fan).
3. Blue wire/3rd wire-The wire used to monitor and control fan
speed (RPM), available only on motherboard 3 pin connector.
4 RPM-Speed of the fan in rotations per minute, higher the better.
